Not that i’m aware of? Blue ray is just a high def dvd player, just try using it, that will tell you.

Nope, you just won’t get the full HD experience.
You would need a HDMI cable for HD ones anyway.
If its a crappy HD TV, of course you won’t notice the difference in HD quality.
I recommend Sony, Sharp or Samsung for HD TV’s.
Your Eye Sight might be different from mine to.
And men tend to be more picky about TV’s.
I’m surprised, you can’t tell the difference between VHS and DVD quality.
Look… put, 3 TV’s in the room, and see the difference between, BluRay, DVD and VHS.
Or get a sales guy to show you.
NOTE TO STEVE: don’t forget about 720p

well. i had an old tv, ya know, glass screen n what not.. well i hooked up my ps3 to it and played a blue ray disk. it played, it just lacks “blue ray” quality.

No, you do not need an HD set to use it. What you would get is a picture not much better than DVD.
To get the full quality Blu-Ray offers, you need an HD set.

You don’t understand what? You might be blind if you can’t tell the difference between 480 standard or 1080p HD?
I really don’t believe any of your statements since they make no sense.
Go to a store that has a Blu-Ray player and 1080p HDTV running a demo and tell me you can’t see the difference between old tube 480 standard def and the HDTV?
Answer to your insane question – No, you don’t need an HDTV to watch Blu-Ray but you will only see a crappy picture like watching TV in the 70’s. It is sending a 1080p video signal but if the TV can only produce a 480 standard resolution picture that is all you are going to see.

You don’t need an HD tv. If you have a blu-ray player and a standard tube, then your sending a super-quality picture to an out-dated tv. My family is just the opposite. My dad bought a flat-screen hd tv a while ago. A nice tv, don’t get me wrong. I especially like it for playing my Xbox 360. We don’t have a blu-ray or hd-dvd player, though. I keep telling my dad that the hd tv isn’t worth much without an hd signal for it to show. Oh well. This is like your situation, except reversed: you have the hd player going to a crappy tv. Could I borrow your blu-ray player? Just kidding.

Yes, you will need to purchase an HDTV to use your blu-ray player.
The reason, and this is key to your secondary question as well, is all about resolution and scanning frequencies.
Higher resolution (more lines per inch) in combination with a higher scan rate (frequency of the image being refreshed) gives much more depth and detail to the image being displayed. Granted this is a very basic answer to a very technical issue but it does give the essence of the answer.
Once you have purchased your new hdtv, you will be able to use your new blu-ray player for your blu-ray discs and it will play your dvd’s as well.
