I don't know where you live, however I would take that to mean that DirecTV doesn't have a HD connection to your local stations - yet. If DirecTV is still using the station's analog signal, they don't have HD to give to you.

Both DirecTV and Dish Network are working on changing local station feeds from analog over to digital. Obviously this is going to take some time. I have no idea why the satellite providers waited so late in the game to start making the transition to digital (considering we've had digital signals in the air since 2002), but they are just now changing. I live in a major city and DirecTV is still using the analog over the air signal on their system for many of the stations!

You could ask DirecTV what their schedule is for carrying the locals in digital / HD. They actually have a department named "Locals" that handles this stuff. As an immediate option, you could use an antenna and receive the HD feed over the air direct from your local stations. That's what I do.

Best bet is to call 1-800-directv, you should be accessing the local channels in your area with whatever programming they offer in HD like Good Morning America. This will depend on your dish but if you just signed up and installs you should have the latest dish that will get you local channels, in HD. Most local newscasts are not yet in HD though some large metro areas (like Atlanta) do.
