To me, yes. A resounding YES. Some people don’t see or appreciate the difference though. My elderly parents for example, they see the difference but they don’t care too much about tv so it isn’t worth it for them. I think the vast majority of people would agree that it’s worth the extra though.

Digital TV signal without a HD converter box has the same picture quality as an analog signal. You are not viewing HDTV. Assuming you have a HDTV you can only see true HD if you have a HD converter box. Most Cable and Dish HD is broadcast at 1080p. Most 720p HDTV’s process the HD signal as 1080i. There is little difference in clarity between the newer 1080p vs. 720p unless your HDTV screen is over 40″. But back to your question, the difference is huge if your investment in your HDTV was for viewing quality and clarity.
