That’s what Sony claims in it’s product brochure. It also says that a feature bulit into this TV;Sony calls it Bravia Engine Pro (whatever that means), will upconvert all (480i to 1080i) standard signals to full hd (1080p).How is this possible?

Any display will convert to its native resolution. If the native is 1080p, then the TV will convert anything to that.

You aren’t really gaining much quality when talking about 480i upconverted, but 1080i will look great.

TVs have to convert the incoming signals into their native resolution, which in this case is 1920×1080 pixels. The “Bravia Engine Pro” is just a marketing term Sony uses to distinguish their features from other brands. Your tv will upconvert the incoming signals (480i to use your example) to 1080p. This is one reason why analog signals look so bad on hd tvs – it has to turn 480 pixels into a whopping 1080 pixels. However, if you are receiving a 1080i HD signal the picture will look spectacular.
