due to some switching around of componets and adding on new stuff, i am left with a sony remote (basic), with no sony tv to use it on, and a panasonic tv(older style, not flatscreen) with no remote .

You cant use a sony remote on a panasonic tv. Buy a universal remote that you can use on any tv.
