      Only Nikon knows that.

While you’re wasting time on rumour sites, waiting around for the next model to come out, you will have lost a year or more of photography opportunities that will never, ever come back.

Do you want to keep waiting for the next model … and the next model … and the next model … never buying a camera, missing years of picture opportunities and falling behind in practicing photography? Or do you want to start making pictures tomorrow?

      You decide.

Next on the horizon is called better technology. There is no point in waiting for the next breakthrough as it will eventually be replaced with something else. We call this history. What we project what will be in the future now will be obsolete when the present arrives… Just buy a camera you can afford and stick with the best lens you can afford. Im planning to purchase the D90 this weekend and instead of keeping the 18-105mm lens that it comes with, I will be getting 18-55mm lens which in my opinion has better value and also a professional lens 70-200mm for indoor sports/night life. Its the lens that makes the camera, not the other way around. Invest in your lens and guarantee you that it will outlive your camera body forever.

Completely agree with not waiting for the next best thing.
What you should decide on and investigate is lenses. Do you want to invest in lenses for a Nikon or a Canon or ? Who makes the better glass and whose is infamous. I’ve “heard” Canon makes better lenses, but I’m still going to get the Nikon D90. Why? It does what I want (decent images and 24fps video) whereas the Canon 5D Mark II shoots 30fps (and bigger images than I need).

Also, if you are serious about video/filmmaking realise that Canon has a whole camcorder line that they will not be dismantling in favor of DSLR-based video. Nikon has no camcorder line in jeopardy of cannibalisation, so they can very easily push the limits of what a DLSR can do.

Also consider what will be coming from Red in the very near future with Scarlet and their DSMC.

If you want to take great still images, stick with Canon (every professional I’ve worked with swears by them). If you want to jump on a very possible new wave of video and a second best (and potentially awesome) still photo company, go with Nikon (and the D90 is a great starting point). If you want to take your chances with a new, possibly unstable, possibly amazing company, go Red.

Why does it matter? The D90 is brand new and they’re not going to replace it for a while. Definitely not within the next year.
